What Services Does Volunteer in Palestine Offer to the Palestinian Community? Volunteer in Palestine is a locally created and led initiative that has contributed to the community since 2011. Our mission is to foster a meaningful, long-term impact on the Palestinian local community by promoting the exchange of ideas and encouraging participants to understand one another’s perspectives truly. We do this through two key ways – hosting international volunteers to help share their skills and expertise and coordinating initiatives to support vulnerable groups like women, youth, and refugees in and around Hebron.

Our Volunteer and Internship programs in the West Bank, Palestine, have been carefully researched, tailored, and designed to offer valuable insights into daily Palestinian legal affairs, Palestinian daily life, the educational system, Palestinian culture, Palestinian refugees, women’s rights, and human rights.

At the same time, collaboration with international and local organizations helps support the local community through education programs, English language support, and building professional skills. Interactions with international volunteers are incredibly valuable to the Palestinian community, offering an opportunity to share their stories of resilience and hope.

Educational Programs

Volunteer in Palestine offers a range of educational programs to benefit community members in and around Palestine. Quality education is important to ensuring a bright future for young people in Palestine. Programs run by the Center usually fall into two main categories: English language and vocational training.

English Language Classes

English language study is a great way for program beneficiaries to boost their skills, open up future employment opportunities, and connect with the world. While English classes are widely accessible in schools, they aren’t usually high quality or focused on helping students to speak the language. Speaking English with International volunteers is one of the best ways students can improve their competency and comprehension and learn to interact confidently with people professionally. Attending English language classes at Volunteer in Palestine has greatly impacted the future trajectory of many young people, better equipping them for a successful future.

Vocational Training

Good IT skills are essential to many vocations in an increasingly digital world. A lack of digital literacy can severely impede people’s potential opportunities for good employment. Volunteer in Palestine supports the learning of IT skills through workshops and seminars organized by our international volunteers.

Entrepreneurship

Many of the world’s jobs are provided through small and growing businesses. On the streets of Hebron, many people start and run their own small businesses, providing income for themselves and their families. Good entrepreneurial skills are essential to helping people start and grow a tiring business. Entrepreneurship is also a big component of innovation, enabling big ideas to come to life through the business platform.

Resume Building

Having a good resume is essential to gaining employment. A bad or incomplete resume can be easily overlooked, even if the person has the right skills for the job. At Volunteer in Palestine, we support people to build a great resume that reflects their experience and potential. With unemployment such a significant issue, especially in the refugee camps around Hebron, resume-building is one thing that can help people get to the next step in their careers and support their families simultaneously.

Support for Refugees and Vulnerable Groups

Support for refugees and vulnerable groups in the West Bank is crucial due to the persistent challenges they face, including displacement, economic hardship, and restricted access to basic services. Many Palestinian refugees live in overcrowded camps with inadequate infrastructure, limited job opportunities, and restricted freedom of movement due to military checkpoints and security barriers. Humanitarian aid, community-based initiatives, and international advocacy ensure these communities receive the necessary resources to survive and thrive. Investing in these communities helps preserve dignity, fosters resilience, and contributes to long-term stability in a region where displacement and hardship have shaped generations.

Volunteers regularly go to refugee camps like Al Fawwar near Hebron City to help support educational and vocational programs within the camps. People in Palestinian refugee camps, especially vulnerable groups like women and children, often face shortages of service provision, access to health, and quality education. Volunteers can make a real difference in these communities by sharing their skills and expertise, teaching and practicing the English language, and just showing up in solidarity.

Volunteers can also be proactive and organize their own activities either with the center’s support or by themselves. Volunteer in Palestine recently organized a visit to an area called Masafer Yatta. This community frequently hosts international volunteers to help reduce the risk of violence and attacks from nearby settlers and to help them go about their daily lives. After the visit, a recent volunteer, Patrick, organized to spend 4 nights at Masafer Yatta as part of their international protective presence.

Cultural Exchange and Awareness

In addition to learning from the local community, international volunteers bring diversity and great learning opportunities to Volunteer in Palestine. This can, in itself, be an incredibly valuable contribution to the Palestinian people they interact with.

By spending time with international volunteers, the community gains a much more diverse understanding of the world, including different viewpoints, customs, holidays, and different foods!

Volunteers often host events at Volunteer in Palestine, organize workshops, and open discussions to foster mutual understanding. This exchange of ideas and culture from around the world helps create a rich experience for Palestinians, who are often unable to travel due to difficulties with the occupation.

Most importantly, through engagement with international volunteers, Palestinian people feel as though their stories are being heard. They feel supported and like they have the backing of people worldwide as they continue to resist the occupation.

Community Development Projects

Apart from our structured educational programs, Volunteer in Palestine engages in many other activities to help the development of the Palestinian community, especially engaging our international volunteers to share their expertise.

Volunteers at Volunteer in Palestine can visit various Palestinian-led non-government organizations and learn more about locally-driven community initiatives. Often, volunteers can help economically by purchasing goods or learning more about the stories of the people running these projects and the challenges they face in day-to-day operations under the occupation. They are also encouraged to collaborate with these organizations and give support through skills sharing or training.

For example, a local business hand-makes beautiful ceramics and glassware, employing many people and supplying many shops around Hebron. When volunteers visit this business, they can witness the craftsmanship and attention to detail of each hand-made product and support the continuation of employment by purchasing keepsakes and souvenirs for friends and family at home.

Another example is the village of Umm Al Khayer in Masafar Yatta, an area affected by frequent attacks from Israeli settlers. Visiting this village and hearing from its people regularly occurs at Volunteer in Palestine. However, volunteers also took the initiative to organize additional time at the village, acting as an international protective presence. This can help the local people go about their daily lives without interruptions. It also helps volunteers to see what life is like in a Palestinian village and the day-to-day reality of the occupation.

The Center also collaborates with local organizations to provide a range of workshops, especially to university students, helping prepare them for work. This includes professionalism skills like email writing, time management, and communication skills. We also work with local organizations focusing on women’s rights to help provide workshops that include psychological support, training, and resources for women to learn about their rights.

Success Stories

One of Volunteer in Palestine’s beneficiaries, Qatada, was 16 years old when he started English classes with us. He was really interested in learning the ‘world’s language’ because it would help him connect with different people and open up more opportunities for his future. However, besides a few words he’d picked up at school, he was starting from scratch.

Qatada’s first teachers, Mr. Ibrahim and Mr. Isaac helped lay a strong foundation and build vocabulary. The combination of great teachers and a real desire to learn meant that he improved quickly. Qatada completed his intermediate-level English with a Centre volunteer from the United States. He found that learning from a native speaker really helped take his spoken English to the next level.

Now 20 years old, Qatada is close to fluent in English. Although he no longer needs to take classes, he’s still seen around the Center most days, where he volunteers in addition to his University studies. For Qatada, spending time with Volunteer in Palestine has been an incredibly valuable experience. It has allowed him to meet many new people, learn about new religions and cultures, and open his mind to the world outside his home city of Hebron.

Rebekah, 28, spent time with Volunteer in Palestine in October 2024. She had always been interested in Palestinian culture and the complicated history of the area. She was looking for an opportunity not only to visit but also to volunteer in the community. She says:

“It has been such a meaningful experience hearing from those actively living under the Israeli occupation and better understanding the Palestinian way of life in the West Bank. Hebron has been a wonderful home; Palestinians are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and despite the situation in Gaza and the regional tensions, Hebron feels very, very safe.

The accommodation is so nice and conveniently located. The center feels like a family, eating meals together and going on excursions. There are many guides to show you around the area and teach you about the history and current state of the city. Everyone is eager to help you with everything, from giving cafe recommendations to practicing your Arabic.”
