The Middle East, a region rich in history and culture, is often marred by conflict and instability, creating challenging conditions for humanitarian work. Among the most vulnerable in these volatile areas are women and children, who endure severe shortages of necessities, healthcare, and education. Opportunities to help children in the Middle East are particularly critical, as they face not only the immediate consequences of conflict but also long-term impacts on their development and well-being. The disruption of social and governance structures exacerbates their plight, making it both crucial and difficult to provide effective assistance.

Humanitarian efforts in the region face significant obstacles, including geographic isolation, damaged infrastructure, and the risks posed by ongoing violence. These barriers complicate the delivery of aid, yet addressing the needs of the most vulnerable—especially children—is essential. Children are often disproportionately impacted by conflict, facing heightened risks of violence, displacement, and the interruption of their education. Overcoming these challenges is vital for alleviating their suffering and fostering resilience in the hardest-hit communities. By seizing opportunities to help children in the Middle East, we can contribute to their immediate relief and support their path toward a more stable and hopeful future.

Where Can You Help?

Children in the Middle East are suffering all over: it is hard to prioritize one area over another. The biggest problems currently are in Yemen, Syria, and Palestine, but that is not to say these are the only problems. The issues tend to spill over borders so that Jordan and Lebanon for example end up hosting refugees from Iraq, Syria, and Palestine.

It may be that these countries (Lebanon and Jordan) are better places to help the vulnerable because these countries are more stable than say Syria. Palestine however is often misrepresented in terms of safety for traveling, visiting, or volunteering. Accessing Gaza is not possible, but the West Bank is stable and easy enough to visit. Many Palestinians are refugees in their territory so many people need help in the West Bank.

How Can You Help?

Fortunately, some organizations arrange programs for those who are passionate about helping people in the Middle East. Some of the most prevalent involve volunteering in refugee camps to teach children English or distribute food to those who need it the most.

Some programs can be more specific if you have a background in a certain field – for example if you have an engineering degree, you might help develop clean water sources for children, or if you have a background in human rights law, you might be represented unaccompanied child refugees in their legal battle for their rights.

Effective Volunteer Activities for Children

In the previous section, we talked about all the specific things you can do to help children in the Middle East. Sometimes even just putting a smile on those faces can be a massive help – living in reduced circumstances can be very demoralizing and anything that can lighten a child’s mood is invaluable in its way. Here at Volunteer in Palestine, one of our volunteers was a circus performer and made shows, involving magic tricks for the children in refugee camps and the local schools here in Hebron. Another came for one week to coach football and hand out football shirts to the kids with the names of their favorite players on them.
