Sites To See in Hebron Palestine

Modern-day Hebron, located in the heart of Palestine, sits at the crossroads of the Levant, the Mediterranean, Asia, Europe, and North Africa. This unique geographical positioning has shaped Hebron’s culture, drawing influences from various nations and peoples throughout history.

On a day tour of Hebron, visitors can witness how this rich blend of cultural influences has created a vibrant and unified identity, making the city a fascinating destination like no other in the world.

1. The Old City of Hebron, Palestine

Palestine is home to numerous historical treasures and many designated World Heritage sites. The Old City of Hebron itself was declared a Palestinian heritage site by UNESCO in 2017, along with the Ibrahimi Mosque, which holds the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

However, the Old City is under threat from illegal Israeli settlements, and Hebron is often an epicenter of assaults against Palestinians by occupation forces. Participants touring the Old City will have the opportunity to visit these sites and observe the conditions in which Palestinians here live, under the safety of a guide of course.

Additionally, participants will tour Hebron’s economic hubs. Hebron is famous for its specialized crafts, including glassblowing, wood carving, and textiles; in fact, Hebron is home to the Herbawi Textile Factory, the last factory in Palestine still manufacturing the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh. Participants will tour these factories and workshops as they are central to Hebron’s notable industries and local culture.

2. Religious Sites in Hebron

Palestine is the Holy Land of three world’s largest religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Palestine, therefore, also contains or is very near many of the holiest religious sites in the world. As mentioned previously, Hebron, West Bank, Palestine, is home to the Ibrahimi Mosque, one of the most important religious and historical sites for Muslims and Jews, as it’s believed to be the burial site of the prophet Abraham and his wife Sarah. Volunteer In Palestine is happy to show the people of the world these religious, historical, and cultural sites to all our participants.

Hebron also sits about an hour from Bethlehem and Jerusalem, which house their own important religious monuments. Participants may easily access these cities as they travel through Palestine, making Hebron an ideal city to explore.

3. Restaurants and Markets in Hebron

Food is highly symbolic of Palestinian culture, often central to family gatherings, festivities, and cultural identity. Staples of the Palestinian diet include bread, meat, rice, sauces, spices, soups, and desserts. Palestinian food culture is also famous for its various types of bread–such as its Taboon (sometimes also called Laffah) flatbread–and its unique white cheese, Jibneh Baide, which is made from either goat or sheep milk and renowned for its nutritious value and distinct flavor.

Palestine is also famous for its meat dishes, which mostly consist of either chicken or goat. An example of a world-renowned Palestinian dish is Qidreh, which is made of rice, chickpeas, and chicken cooked in broth and various spices. Participants will have ample opportunity to taste Palestine’s unique cuisine by taking part in Center-led tours of Hebron!

Areas Of Political Significance

Palestine occupies a unique place in global affairs, especially in the politics of the Middle East, and is subsequently the subject of interest for many. As a participant of Volunteer In Palestine’s day tour, you will also be able to visit areas of political significance within the West Bank, such as the Israeli settlements of Tel Rumeida and Kiryat Arba, as well as well as refugee camps dating back to the time of the Nakba.

Furthermore, tour participants will have the opportunity to speak with both native Palestinians on the front lines facing settlement expansion, as well as members of the settlements themselves. Volunteer In Palestine believes a first-hand view of these issues will provide international visitors a better, more authentic understanding of Palestine’s political circumstances outside the typical coverage this issue receives on the global stage.
