Best Places to Teach English in the Middle East: Whether you’re looking to develop a career teaching English as a foreign language, looking for professional development for a related career track, or keen to experience a new culture and people, teaching English in the Middle East can be a great way to realize your goals.

The Middle East has some or the most hospitable and friendly people you could ever hope to meet. It doesn’t hurt that the food here is great as well. So where exactly in the Middle East can you teach? And which areas are better for which aspects of teaching?

Teaching English in the Arabian Peninsula

Teaching English in the Arabian Peninsula is often the first choice for people when they look for English teacher roles. There is a large demand for quality English teachers in Saudi Arabia. There is less of a demand in Oman, and in Yemen (due to the conflict).

The jobs there are generally well paid, but they are usually looking for teachers with relevant qualifications and at least one to two years of prior teaching experience. While it can be an attractive area for qualified and experienced teachers, as a rule of thumb, it isn’t the best place for new teachers to begin their search.

Teaching English in the Gulf Region

The Gulf Region – that’s to say countries like Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, etc. offer many of the same benefits as Saudi Arabia because they are all wealthy economies with a high demand for English teaching. There are pros and cons to consider in this region.

Summer temperatures can become insanely hot, with the thermometer regularly surpassing 50 degrees centigrade. This makes going outside during the day difficult during the height of summer.

Teaching English in the Levantine Region

In our opinion, the Levantine region is the best area to teach English in the Middle East. For starters, there is a huge demand for English teachers, but not so much concentrated wealth, so there are a variety of entry level volunteer roles. The cost of living for outsiders is not excessive. If you are keen to learn Arabic while living in the Middle East, the Shami dialect spoken in the Levantine region is the most widely recognized throughout the Arab world, making it the most useful one to learn.

The Gulf and Arabian Peninsula can be quite restrictive in terms of local customs. Lebanon, Jordan, and parts of Palestine and Syria are closer to Western culture, meaning there is less of a culture shock for Westerners visiting these countries.

Tips for the Classroom

One important thing to remember when you go to your classes is that they will almost certainly be monolingual and everyone in the class will be speaking Arabic. It is critical to engage your students in the process of learning English so that they don’t slip back into their native tongue during lessons. You should also bear in mind that there are cultural classroom respect norms that may apply which aren’t the default in Western countries.

Teaching in Palestine

Volunteer in Palestine offers teaching programs for those who would like to develop their teaching skills, discover a new culture, and enjoy a fun social experience in the process. Volunteer in Palestine is primarily a language school and training center that seeks to develop the skills of Palestinians at a local level in Hebron to help them meet the challenges of life.

The Teach English, Study Arabic program gives volunteers the opportunity to work as an English teacher and learn Arabic. The Teach for Palestine program is for more experienced English teachers who can bring their previous skills and experience to the table.

All programs include accommodation, food, and various trips both in the city of Hebron and further afield in the West Bank. The West Bank is home to the biblical sites of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, and the Dead Sea. In addition to these historical places, you can visit the beautiful city of Nablus and the lively city of Ramallah. This will give you the opportunity to see first-hand the Israeli Occupation and its effects on the Palestinian people.
