Helping women develop globally involves two primary strategies: advocating for women’s rights through existing international laws and increasing access to quality education to enhance their circumstances. The Women’s Rights and Education Program embodies these approaches, focusing on creating meaningful and lasting change by ensuring that legal frameworks are upheld and that women have equal opportunities to improve their lives.

For individuals with backgrounds in law or education, securing roles in these areas may be relatively straightforward. However, those new to the field might need to gain experience through internships or volunteer work, such as through organizations like Volunteer in Germany. Such programs often include opportunities to engage with activists, collaborate with women’s rights advocates, and teach women in communities with limited access to education, providing valuable hands-on experience and contributing to significant social impact.

Which Organizations Can I Take The Women’s Rights and Education Program With?

The United Nations typically leads the way on these types of programs, but securing a role with the UN is very competitive and very few places are available. The UN’s Generation Equality movement has increased worldwide exposure to the dynamics of the #Metoo movement of women unhappy with the status quo, who are determined to affect positive change.

Beyond the UN, there are plenty of international organizations which offer programs in this area. There tend to be intergovernmental organizations but non-governmental organizations can also provide alternatives: there is often less bureaucracy involved with NGOs so that volunteers or interns can more directly see the impact of their work.

How Long Should You Do It For?

This aspect depends entirely on your ambitions, goals, and availability. If you have the time and resources, you could take a whole summer between studying to make a big difference and connect with a community through an extensive internship program. However, for people who are already committed to a job or to a full-time study program, a shorter, intensive internship or volunteer program might be more viable – say a week or two.

The length of time does not necessarily indicate the quality of the program, so however long you do it, it is important to remember to take time and find something that works for you. Once you have found the right program, a good organization will give you flexibility in the length of your program the maximize the benefit for you.

Where to Do a Women’s Rights and Education Program?

If you are considering a program like one of these, and you currently live in a ‘Western’ country there will likely be some opportunities to do it in your home country. However, if making a difference is important to you, you have to consider where you can make the most impact. Additionally, doing one of these programs overseas can help develop professional skills that employees value (more so than doing an internship in your home country).

There are lots of organizations doing valuable work all over the world, in South America, Africa, the Middle East, and South East Asia. The Middle East offers an interesting place to do this type of work in a society that has tended to be male-dominated in the past, but with signs that this is beginning to change. And this is where Volunteer in Palestine comes in.
